Fluorescent light bulb tubes can be purchased in several different colors. The colors are measured in kelvin.
Customers frequently ask me what is the best color light for my business? My answer, is "whatever you think looks the best". Some people really want the daylight color, while others feel like they want the lower kelvin lights because they provide a "warmer" feel.
The lower the kelvin number the more orange/yellow the light bulb will look. Generally the lowest fluorescent tube that is available for purchase is a 3000 kelvin lamp. The most common standard lamp right now is the 3500 kelvin tube. As the kelvin number goes up the color of the lights gets whiter, then blueish white.
As a lighting person I can't stand seeing when people don't even pay attention to the light bulbs they are purchasing and buy different colored lights then put them in the same fixture. I took this picture at an office that we started servicing. The tube on the left is likely a 3500 kelvin. The tube on the right is a bluish white, which is most likely a 6500 kelvin, which in stores is sometimes marked "daylight".
Generally we see medical facilities going with 5000 kelvin or higher lights. They really want the white light that is more like true daylight. Most of the retail facilities we service either want the 4100 "cool white" or even the 3500 kelvin color light bulbs. Offices lighting runs the spectrum from 3500 kelvin to 6500 kelvin, it just depends on what the person in charge of the lighting prefers, we see about equal amounts of ever color in office setttings.
If your company's lights are serviced by Bright Ideas Lighting Co your light fixtures will not be half hazzardly mixed colors. We pay attention to the details and will make sure all the lights match colors.
Many times the higher kelvin bulbs will cost more. We also see manufactuers simply write "full spectrum" on the bulb then charge a outrageous prices. Most of the time a day light bulb is going to look very similar to the "full spectrum" bulbs and cost much less.
